When’s the last time you tried something for the first time …

For WRPC it was October 2025 when we shot our first ever Civilian Service Rifle competition.
  • 16 competitors
  • 672 rounds expended
  • 4 courses of fire
Zero safety warnings (as we expect, we are very thorough on safety)
Comprehensive safety briefing before we start
CSR involves shooting targets with a limited time presentation – usually 5, 8 or 10 seconds – with one or two rounds from a variety of positions and distances.
Rifles used are straight pull or bolt action in .223 and 30 calibre and results are scored on accuracy.
Typical course of fire to start ;
Start 3m behind the 300m firing point, rifle held in the trail position, rifle loaded and on safe.
Targets will make two exposures of 30 seconds. On exposure, advance to the firing point, adopt the prone position, make ready and open fire.
A maximum of 10 shots are to be fired.
On completion, make safe and remain in the prone position for clearance by the RCO.
And another typical course of fire ;
At 200m, start in the standing alert position, rifles loaded and made safe with 10 rounds.
Targets will make 10 exposures of 6 seconds, one shot only to be fired at each exposure from the standing, kneeling or squatting position as the shooter prefers.
Firer must return to the standing alert position between target exposures.
Other courses of fire shot involve two shots per target, shooting from the seated position and so on.
You only have limited time to aim and fire from the correct position and with a heavy rifle, that’s not so easy – this isn’t your usual static target work from a bipod!
Rifles used can be modern or historic, with optics or iron sights. You’ll see a mixture of modern and classics like the venerable Lee Enfield – so long as it holds 10 shots, it’s good to go!
As this was our first ever CSR event we had extra volunteer RCO’s from other clubs who shoot CSR regularly as an extra safety factor, plus a very comprehensive safety briefing – and as usual all members conducted themselves impeccably.
Great fun was had by all and we are looking to run this as a quarterly event.
Full members who have completed probation are eligible to shoot full bore rifles at outdoor and MOD ranges with WRPC. The club has rifles for member’s use, just pay for the ammo.
WRPC has as comprehensive full bore training programme and all members expressing an interest are offered training with the aim to earn their Shooter Competency Card.
