Wakefield Rifle and Pistol Club

PSUK Competitions

Police Sport UK Shooting were – many years ago – competitions confined to serving police officers.

This has all changed and the competitions are now open to anyone wishing to take part which currently includes many members of the Wakefield Rifle and Pistol Club.

You can go to the PSUK website at psukshooting.org where you will be able to see the scores put up by Wakefield Members shooting against competitors from all our police forces and others from all over the country which includes England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

There are two seasons applicable to this competition. Winter and Summer. Our winter league culminates in a National Shoot off at a competition held in the different force areas, and this is for Police members only, but non police division winners will all get awards and promotion or demotion in the leagues. The summer competitions which start in April will finish just before our big National Open Competition held in the second week of September at Bisley Camp, Woking Surrey.

The competitions shoot four disciplines, Prone rifle, 25yds in winter and 50m in summer, Lightweight Sport Rifle or Gallery Rifle Small Bore, Air Pistol and Bench rest at 20yds or 25yds. The summer competitions finish just before our big open competition at Bisley, but to date we have had no club entrants for that. It’s a shame because we cover nearly all the shooting competitions available up to and including Centrefire Rifle Match and F class which are usually sold out early. We are growing the LSR competitions currently dependent on the enthusiasm of those wanting to shoot the growing variety of .22 rf and Centre fire lever action rifle comps currently available.

Don’t let the idea of competing be daunting to you. The divisions are there to cater for beginners, to National Squad members. You will be made to feel included in all disciplines and for those who are getting older (including me) you can still see your name on the score sheets.

I also recently extended the rimfire competitions to include air rifles, which means air only members can actually take part against rimfire shooters.

For those unfamiliar with Bisley Camp, it is a great place to simply go and visit. The range moved from Wimbledon in 1897 and most of the buildings are stuck in Edwardian times. It is a huge place with a variety of places to eat and stay on camp. Some good and some not so good, but if you have a tent or a caravan you can use that as a base. Myself and some other members have been doing that since 1982, and we still love it. I still get a buzz just driving in through the gate.

If you wish to take part in the PSUK competitions, please come and see me on range on a Thursday night. I am usually there, but for other circumstances, and I can discuss your options with you.

W.R & P.C is a great place to start your sport and hopefully we can help you achieve. There are several of us who have shot for Great Britain and there is no reason why that cannot be you.

Yours in sport,

John Emmerson
